Marina started making music on her own way in 2007. Before that she tried to join many bands but she didn't really success, so she decided to do it with her rules. She paid £500 to produce a few tracks and they ended up to be on her first extended play, Mermaid vs. Sailor EP. It was released in November 23, 2007. Back then she used the same stage name as now, Marina and the Diamonds, which is translated into English from her own name. She says that "she wants to make a difference between her own life and her career." She sold 70 copies of her first EP through MySpace. Later, in 2008 Marina was booked to open for Gotye and after that she signed to 679 Records. She recorded her debut single, double a-sided consisting of "Obsessions" and "Mowgli's Road". The single came out in the US in November 19, 2008 through Neon Gold Records.
In 2009 Diamandis released her second EP, the Crown Jewels EP, featuring her second single "I Am Not a Robot". Marina and the Diamonds' first major single was a re-record of "Mowgli's Road", released on November 13, 2009. In January 2010 it was announced that she had taken 2nd place on the longlist for the BBC Sounf of 2010 poll.
Marina Lambrini Diamandis was born October 10, 1985 in Abergavenny, Wales, but she grew up in Pandy, Wales with her two younger sisters. Her father was Greek origin and her mother was Welsh origin. Marina went to St. Catherine's Embassy School and Haberdashers' Monmouth School. When Marina was sixteen years old and her parents divorced, she decided to move to Greece with her father, but after two years Marina moved back to Wales. When she dropped out of high school she moved straight to London and attended to a dance school, but she quit shortly after two months. After that, in 2005 Marina took a one year singing course at Vocaltech (West London Music School). She tried to audition for many musicals, including The Lion King, but she didn't success. Marina also tried to audition for a reggae boy band, she dressed up as a boy and acted like a boy, but they didn't want her to audition. After dropping out of four different universities, including the MiddlesexUniversity,she started making music on her own way. Since Marina was 15 years old she knew that she wanted to make music, it was her vocation, even though she wasn't very musical before that.
